A Pilgrimage to Rome, Assisi and Orvieto

Chesterton Schools Network

March 16 – 26, 2022 / $3000.00 all-inclusive

This pilgrimage will immerse the students, faculty and families of the Chesterton Schools Network in the incredible history, heritage and traditions of Roman Catholic civilization.  Featuring one week in Rome and three days in Assisi, this all-inclusive tour includes everything in the cost: airfare, lodging, private bus transportation, private guides, meals and more.

Daily Mass – always celebrated at the tombs of great saints and martyrs – is the foundation of each day. This will be complemented by a robust and immersive touring program through the greatest lives, moments and monuments of Roman Catholic Civilization. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend a number of special events, such as a Chesterton Schools Network concert in the Basilica of St. Cecilia in Rome, a special Mass with Cardinal Harvey in St. Paul’s Basilica in Rome, a Mass in the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi and a Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican!

The entire network will be divided into three main groups, however certain events – such as the special events mentioned above – will overlap and the entire network will participate together. The three groups are: (1) Chesterton Academy of the Twin Cities, (2) Chesterton Academy of the Holy Family, and (3) Chesterton Schools Network. You can find the brochure for your particular group below in the itinerary section of the webpage.

Introducing Our Back-Up Pilgrimage - Portugal!

Portugal does not require the vaccine nor do they require regular testing. Only a negative test is required to enter the country. If Italy does not change their rules by January 15, 2022, we're going to Portugal!

On this trip we will venture in the footsteps of the greatest saints and martyrs of our Catholic heritage. We will experience the history and magnificence of Rome firsthand, exploring the greatest sites found anywhere in the world. Most importantly we will celebrate Mass every day, reorienting and reinvigorating our lives in, through and towards Christ.

Every morning we will depart our Vatican-area guesthouse and set out into Rome. We will explore Rome’s greatest sites, from the tunnels of crypts and catacombs to the many ancient amphitheaters and early Christian churches.

Papal Audience

This trip features an audience with the Holy Father! We will also explore every corner of the Pope’s city, from the tomb of St. Peter deep beneath St. Peter’s Basilica and to the very top of Michelangelo’s soaring dome.

On the way to Assisi we will stop in the hilltop city of Orvieto, home to one of Italy’s finest Gothic cathedrals, the Duomo of Orvieto, which serves as a solemn reliquary for the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena!

We will spend three days touring the medieval city of Assisi and adventuring in the mountains above. We will have the unique opportunity to get to know one of the Church’s greatest saints, St. Francis, as we walk in his very footsteps.

The Itinerary

Please reference the brochure (found below) for the full itinerary.

Getting There

Wednesday, March 16

Today we depart the United States for Rome, Italy. Please reference the brochure specific to your group for the full flight plan.

Rome is the Eternal City. There is no place more beautiful and more important in the history of the world than Rome. As Catholics, we know that Rome’s eternal purpose of civilizing and saving the world through the work of Christ’s Church continues every day.

This trip features one full week in Rome. During this week we will explore the history and places of Rome’s incredible three-thousand year history, highlighting the artistic and architectural treasures along the way. The itinerary includes a Papal Audience, the Scavi Tour, the Colosseum and Roman Forum, the Catacombs, the Four Major Basilicas, the Best Baroque Churches and Monuments of Rome, the Jesuit Churches, and so much more.

On the way to Assisi we will stop in the beautiful city of Orvieto, home to one of Italy’s finest Gothic cathedrals, the Duomo of Orvieto, which serves as a solemn reliquary for the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena, the first Church-approved Eucharistic miracle. Here is the story.

In 1263 a Bohemian priest, Peter of Prague, had doubts about the Real Presence. His lack of Faith was so great that he decided to journey to Rome on pilgrimage, hoping that God might restore his faith. One day during this arduous journey he stopped in a small town called Bolsena to offer Mass. During the Consecration, when he broke the host, blood began to flow from it and drip all over the corporal on the altar! This great miracle restored Peter’s faith and became the impetus behind the institution of the Feast of Corpus Christi!

Known as the Seraphic City for its angelic beauty, the students will explore the timeless charm and beauty of Assisi for three days. We’ll go back in time to the 13th century, when St. Francis and St. Claire gave up their lives to follow Christ and proclaim the truth and beauty of the Faith. Throughout our time in Assisi, these great saints will become our friends and a model for the students. We’ll witness the Gothic masterpieces of Giotto and Cimabue, the great precursors of the Renaissance, and we’ll glimpse the actual beauty of a the medieval age which has so often been misrepresented as dark and unenlightened. Last but not least, we will enjoy a hike up into the mountains where the great saint himself once fled the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register?

At the top of this webpage click “Register Now”.

What if I am not vaccinated against Covid-19? Can I go to Italy?

Non-vaccinated American visitors are asked to self-quarantine for five days OR until a Covid-19 (PCR or Rapid Antigen) test has come back negative. On the day of arrival we will make sure that anyone who is unvaccinated has the chance to visit the nearby pharmacy for a Covid-19 test.

Tests costs 13 euro for students and 19 euro for adults.

What is the "Green Pass" and do we need it for this trip?

What is the “Green Pass”?

For Americans, the “Green Pass” is proof of vaccination against Covid-19 (CDC Card), proof of recovery within the last six months (prior to the trip), or a negative Covid-19 test.

Do I need the “Green Pass” for this trip?

Most of the places we will visit DO NOT REQUIRE the Green Pass. Every evening we will have dinner at the villa (in Rome) or at our hotel (in Assisi). In this way we will not eat in establishments that require the Green Pass. Furthermore, the vast majority of sites we will be visiting DO NOT REQUIRE the Green Pass.

There are a few sites that we will visit where the Green Pass IS required. We will make sure that anyone who is not vaccinated (nor has proof of recovery) has the opportunity to take a test the evening before such site visits. This would amount to three tests throughout the course of the trip.

Tests cost 13 euro for students and 19 euro for adults.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Please click here for our Terms and Conditions, where you will find the cancellation and refund policy related to this tour.

Do I need a negative Covid-19 test to board my flight to Italy?

Currently, anyone flying to Italy is required to present a negative Covid-19 test taken within three days prior to departure at the gate of departure in the USA. This is a required to board the aircraft. Although this rule may change come June, we ask that everyone schedule a test with their primary care physician or at a local Urgent Care.

Do I need to wear a mask on the flight?

Yes – it is law. We hope that this will change by the time of the trip.

Do I need a negative Covid-19 test to come back to the USA?

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires all air passengers entering the United States (including U.S. citizens and Legal Permanent Residents) to present a negative COVID-19 test, taken within ONE calendar day of departure. Please know that we will organize a time for the entire group to be tested one day before departure.

Tests cost 13 euro for students and 19 euro for adults.

Do I need to wear a mask in Italy?

Although the laws governing masks are subject to change before the trip, wearing a face mask is currently mandatory in certain indoor public places throughout Italy. In total, there are only four sites that we will visit that enforce mask wearing while indoors.

What if I test positive for Covid-19 and cannot return home?

In the event that you test positive for Covid-19 and are unable to board the flight home, ProRome will assist in arranging a hotel at your expense. ProRome will also assist in rebooking your flights at a later date at your expense.

Chaperones from the Avalon School have volunteered to stay in Rome should any student be forced to remain in Rome until they are able to test negative. ProRome staff will also be present in Rome.

Please know that any expenses resulting from a positive Covid-19 test are covered under our travel insurance plans. For this reason travel insurance is highly recommended. Please contact us for more information.

How many bags can I bring on the flight?

One carry-on, one checked bag, and one personal item.

Can I book my own flights? What is the land-only price?

With permission from the trip leader you may book your own flights. The land-only price is $2400.00.

If I fly separately do I need to arrange transportation from the hotel to the airport?

Yes. You are responsible for your own transportation should you book your own flights.

Are you insured?

Yes. We are fully insured with Travel Agents and Tour Operators Professional Liability Insurance through Zurich American Insurance Company . And yes, travel insurance can be purchased through ProRome Tours.

Will I be safe with your group?

Safety is our #1 priority. We alway stay together as a group. Our policy is 24/7 adult supervision. The only exception is campus, where our students can spend time together without adult supervision.

What do you do in the event of an emergency?

ProRome remains in close contact with the American embassy in Rome, who issues safety and security messages for Italy on their website found here: https://it.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/security-and-travel-information/. In the case of an emergency, we will first ensure that all of our students are safe and able to communicate immediately with their parents. We will then follow the instructions of the local Italian and American authorities and make an informed decision on how to proceed.

Our staff receives training before the program, which involves reading, understanding and committing to memory a forty-page crisis management plan. If you would like to see a copy of this plan please inquire.

Can you accommodate people with food allergies or specific dietary restrictions?

Absolutely. Vegetarian or vegan, gluten-free or celiac, we work only with restaurants and caterers who have ample options for you.

Trip Patron

St. Joseph – the foster father of Jesus Christ – is the greatest of saints. As our trip patron, we will pray to St. Joseph before and during the trip, asking this incredible man, the protector of the child Jesus, to protect us on our pilgrimage!

“The Church is like a great ship being pounded by the waves of life’s different stresses. Our duty is not to abandon ship, but to keep her on her course.
