About This Pilgrimage

Nine nights on pilgrimage with Sacred Heart Parish, from Paray-le-Monial to Provence by private barge

Two nights in Lyon to open, six nights aboard a private barge, then one night in Avignon before returning to Lyon for flights home. The Sacred Heart Parish pilgrimage brings the people of Winchester, Virginia, with Fr. Bjorn Lundberg, to Paray-le-Monial, where Our Lord revealed His Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, and then south through Languedoc and the Camargue to Arles, with Holy Mass each day.

The parish takes its name from the devotion Our Lord gave to the Church at Paray-le-Monial, and this pilgrimage brings the parish there. Two nights in Lyon open the journey, with Mass at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and a day for Mass in the Chapel of the Apparitions at Paray-le-Monial and prayer before the body of St. John Vianney at Ars. On October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, the group boards the Anne-Marie at Sète.

The barge carries only our group: a full private charter of a barge that holds only 21 guests, with twenty pilgrims in ten twin cabins, so the Mass schedule and the pace of each day are set around the pilgrimage. Six nights on the Étang de Thau and the Rhône à Sète Canal reach Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, Aigues-Mortes, where St. Louis IX prayed before sailing on Crusade, the relics of the Holy Marys at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, and Arles, and a final night in Avignon beside the Palace of the Popes before the morning transfer to Lyon for flights home. A ProRome Tour Manager is with the group from arrival to the final transfer home.

The Barge Anne-Marie

A small French canal barge, chartered in full for Sacred Heart Parish, carries the pilgrimage from Sète to Arles through the lagoons, canals, and marshes of Languedoc and the Camargue.

A full private charter, just for the parish

The Anne-Marie holds only 21 guests, and for these six nights the whole barge is ours: no other passengers, a crew of six, and a schedule built around daily Mass. Barge FAQs

Is the barge shared with other travelers?+

No. The Anne-Marie is chartered in full for Sacred Heart Parish. The barge holds only 21 guests, and every place on board for these six nights belongs to our group, so there are no other passengers, and Mass times, meals, and the pace of each day are arranged around the pilgrimage.

Where is Mass celebrated on board?+

On cruising days when the group is not at a church ashore, Fr. Lundberg celebrates Mass in the lounge on the upper deck. On the other days Mass is at the churches along the route: Saint-Guilhem, Aigues-Mortes, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, and Arles.

What are the cabins like?+

Cabins are compact, about 9 square meters, each with a private bathroom with shower and toilet, individual air-conditioning, a safe, a TV, towels, and 220V outlets. One cabin is slightly larger and adapted for reduced mobility. Storage is limited, so a soft-sided bag packs best.

What is included on board?+

All meals aboard are included, with drinks at meals and at the bar, along with a welcome cocktail, the gala dinner, Wi-Fi, headsets for the guided excursions, and port fees. Drinks from the special list are extra. There is no laundry service on board.

Will I get seasick?+

Very unlikely. The barge travels on sheltered canals, the Rhône, and the Étang de Thau lagoon at walking pace, never on the open sea, and it moors each evening.

Can I get off the barge while it cruises?+

The barge spends much of each day moored, and excursions leave by private coach from the mooring. Bicycles are kept on board, and on the slow canal stretches it is often possible to walk or cycle the towpath alongside and rejoin at the next lock.

Is the barge accessible?+

Moving around the barge means a gangway at each mooring and stairs between the main deck, upper deck, and sun deck. Pilgrims should be comfortable with steps. Please tell us at registration about any mobility concerns.

Can the route change?+

For safety, the captain may adjust the navigation for weather or water levels, and depending on mooring availability the Sète stop can be replaced by nearby Frontignan. Any change is handled by the crew and your Tour Manager, and the excursions go ahead by coach.

Additional Trip Information

Practical details to help you prepare for the Sacred Heart Parish pilgrimage.

Flight Information

The pilgrimage is priced land only. Each pilgrim books international flights to and from Lyon Saint-Exupéry (LYS) individually, which allows the use of points and miles and lets pilgrims extend their travel if they wish. Please book flights arriving before 2:00 PM on October 5 and departing after 1:00 PM on October 14, since the coach arrives from Avignon around midday. The ProRome Tour Manager meets the group at the airport on October 5. Questions: office@prorome.com.

Lodging Information

Lyon (2 nights, October 5 & 6): four-star hotel. The barge (6 nights, October 7 to 12): the Anne-Marie, chartered for our group alone, mooring at Sète, Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, Aigues-Mortes, Gallician, and Arles. Avignon (1 night, October 13): hotel in the city. All accommodation is in twin rooms; no single rooms or cabins are available. Specific properties will be confirmed in the final trip information packet.

Group Meals

All meals on the barge are included, with drinks at meals and at the bar, and the voyage closes with a gala dinner on board in Arles. At the hotels in Lyon and Avignon, daily breakfast and dinner are included. Lunches on Days 1, 2, 3, and 9 are on your own, and beverages at hotel dinners and drinks from the barge’s special list are not included. Gratuities and customary Mass donations at host churches are also not included.

Dietary & Health

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or celiac: we work only with restaurants, caterers, and crews that have ample options. If you have allergies, inform us at registration so the barge kitchen can plan ahead, and remind the tour manager at the start of the trip. All participants are expected to be in active good health and able to travel as part of a group; walking, stairs, and the barge gangway are required throughout. Any condition needing special attention should be reported in writing at registration.

What to Pack

This is an autumn pilgrimage. Lyon runs about 50 to 65°F in early October, and the Mediterranean coast and Provence are milder, about 55 to 72°F, with sun, the occasional autumn rain, and the strong mistral wind. Bring broken-in walking shoes with good grip, layers and a windproof jacket, a sun hat, insect repellent for the Camargue wetlands, modest attire for churches (shoulders and knees covered), and a compact umbrella. A daypack, refillable water bottle, universal power adapter, and prescription medications in original containers round it out. Pack light in a soft-sided bag: barge cabins have limited storage.

Placing Calls in France

From a U.S. phone, dial the international code “011” or “+”, then France’s country code 33, then the number without its leading zero. Contact your service provider a few days before departure to activate international calling on your phone.

Crisis Management

If lost: stay put, call your tour manager, or take a taxi to the hotel or barge mooring. If you lose your passport, phone, or wallet: notify your tour manager immediately; the U.S. Consulate General in Marseille and the U.S. Embassy in Paris can issue replacement passports. If injured: notify your tour manager and we arrange emergency transport. Read the full plan →
