About This Pilgrimage

Eight nights in Rome and Assisi on the Washington Catholic Schools pilgrimage

The Washington Catholic Schools pilgrimage brings students, families, and friends of the school community to Italy for eight nights, and daily Mass is the heart of every one of them: over the tomb of St. Paul, at the altars of the great Roman basilicas, in the Duomo of Orvieto, and at the tomb of St. Francis in Assisi.

Six nights in Rome open the pilgrimage, beginning with the place of St. Paul’s martyrdom at Tre Fontane and a Welcome Mass at his basilica. The group joins the Holy Father for the Wednesday General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, walks through the Vatican Museums into the Sistine Chapel, and reaches all four Major Basilicas of Rome, the Colosseum and Forum, the Mamertine Prison, and the catacombs on the Appian Way.

A day in the Alban Hills visits the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo, summer home of the popes. The road north then climbs to Orvieto and its Eucharistic miracle, stops at the Portiuncula, and ends with two nights within the walls of Assisi, at the tombs of St. Francis and St. Clare and in the forest hermitage of the Carceri. A ProRome Tour Manager is with the group from arrival in Rome to the final transfer home.

Additional Trip Information

Practical details to help you prepare for the Washington Catholic Schools pilgrimage.

Flight Information

The pilgrimage is priced land only. Group flights from Indianapolis (IND), Louisville (SDF), or Evansville (EVV) are arranged by ProRome and quoted separately once airline schedules are released. The confirmed flights will be posted in the Group Flight Information section above, and the ProRome Tour Manager meets everyone on arrival in Rome. Questions: office@prorome.com.

Lodging Information

Rome (6 nights): a religious guesthouse run by a Catholic religious order, a short walk from St. Peter’s Square. Assisi (2 nights): a religious guesthouse in the historic centro storico, within walking distance of San Francesco and Santa Chiara. Rooms have private bathrooms, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi, with breakfast daily. Specific properties will be confirmed in the final trip information packet.

Group Meals

Daily breakfast is included, plus one additional group meal each day, either lunch or dinner, according to the final sequencing of the program, including a group lunch in Castel Gandolfo. The other meal is on your own, allowing pilgrims to explore at their own pace. Beverages other than water are not included in group meals.

Dietary & Health

No dietary restrictions. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or celiac: we work only with restaurants and caterers that have ample options. If you have allergies, simply inform the tour manager at the start of the trip. All participants are expected to be in active good health and able to travel as part of a group; walking and stairs are required throughout. Any condition needing special attention should be reported in writing at registration.

What to Pack

This is an autumn pilgrimage. Rome in late October runs about 55 to 70°F, and Assisi is cooler, especially in the mornings and evenings, with rain possible anywhere. Bring broken-in walking shoes with good grip for the Mount Subasio hike, layers and a light jacket, modest attire for churches (shoulders and knees covered), and a compact umbrella or rain shell. A daypack, refillable water bottle, universal power adapter, and prescription medications in original containers round it out. Pack light: you move between two lodgings.

Placing Calls in Italy

From a U.S. phone, dial the international code “011” or “+”, then Italy’s country code 39, then the number. Contact your service provider a few days before departure to activate international calling on your phone.

Crisis Management

If lost: stay put, call your tour manager, or take a taxi to the guesthouse. If you lose your passport, phone, or wallet: notify your tour manager immediately; the U.S. Embassy in Rome can issue replacement passports within hours. If injured: notify your tour manager and we arrange emergency transport. Read the full plan →
