About This Pilgrimage

Join Fr. Charles Lana for nine nights in Northern Italy, from the tomb of St. Ambrose to the Sacra di San Michele

Join Fr. Charles Lana on pilgrimage to the great Catholic cities of Northern Italy. For nine nights Fr. Lana is your spiritual director, with daily Mass at the heart of every one of them: at the tomb of St. Charles Borromeo in Milan, at the tomb of St. Anthony in Padua, and on the feast of St. Michael at an abbey built into the rock above the Val di Susa.

Three nights in Milan open the pilgrimage: Mass in the crypt of the Duomo at the tomb of St. Charles Borromeo, the basilica where St. Ambrose baptized St. Augustine, and Leonardo’s Last Supper. A day in the countryside brings the group to Mesero and the tomb of St. Gianna Beretta Molla, then by boat to Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore.

From Padua the group prays at the tombs of St. Anthony and St. Luke the Evangelist, with days in Verona and Venice. The road west passes the tomb of St. Dominic in Bologna on the way to Turin, home of St. John Bosco and the tomb of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati, and the final Mass is offered on Michaelmas at the Sacra di San Michele. A ProRome Tour Manager is with the group from arrival in Milan to the final transfer home.

On the other evenings dinner is on your own, a chance to enjoy the trattorias of Milan, Padua, and Turin. Lunches are also on your own, including lunch on the shore of Lake Maggiore and around the Rialto in Venice, allowing pilgrims to explore at their own pace. Other beverages are not included.

Dietary & Health

No dietary restrictions. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or celiac: we work only with restaurants and caterers that have ample options. If you have allergies, simply inform the tour manager at the start of the trip. All participants are expected to be in active good health and able to travel as part of a group; walking and stairs are required throughout. Any condition needing special attention should be reported in writing at registration.

What to Pack

Late September is mild and changeable. Expect roughly 55 to 75°F, cooler in the mornings, on Lake Maggiore, and up at the Sacra di San Michele, with rain always possible. Bring broken-in walking shoes with good grip for stone stairs, a light jacket and a sweater, modest attire (shoulders and knees covered) for churches and the Last Supper, and a compact umbrella. A daypack, refillable water bottle, universal power adapter, and prescription medications in original containers round it out. Pack light: you move between three hotels.

Placing Calls in Italy

From a U.S. phone, dial the international code “011” or “+”, then Italy’s country code 39, then the number. Contact your service provider a few days before departure to activate international calling on your phone.

Crisis Management

If lost: stay put, call your tour manager, or take a taxi to the hotel. If you lose your passport, phone, or wallet: notify your tour manager immediately; the U.S. Consulate General in Milan can issue replacement passports. If injured: notify your tour manager and we arrange emergency transport. Read the full plan →
